HOPR Update: Ethiopia Becomes Africa’s Top Wheat Producer, Says PM Abiy
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced that Ethiopia is now Africa’s leading wheat producer, with over 7.7 million hectares of land dedicated to wheat cultivation, yielding an expected 300 million quintals. He also highlighted significant growth in coffee exports, projecting $2 billion in revenue over the next four months, alongside progress in tea and oilseed production.

Today, on Thursday, March 20, 2025, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), while addressing the House of People's Representatives, highlighted Ethiopia's agricultural achievements. He stated that over 7.7 million hectares of land in the country are now covered with wheat crops.
This is expected to yield 300 million quintals of produce, making Ethiopia Africa's leading wheat producer.
The Prime Minister noted that Ethiopia has achieved unprecedented growth in the past eight months, not only in wheat production but also in other crops. He emphasized that significant progress has been made in coffee, tea, and oilseed production following recent reforms.
Regarding coffee production, the Prime Minister stated that Ethiopia has been exporting close to 700 million worth of coffee annually. Lastyear, coffee exports reached 1.4 billion, and in the past eight months alone, exports have exceeded 1.2billion. He projected that coffee exports will reach 2 billion in the next four months.
Prime Minister Abiy highlighted the effectiveness of Ethiopia's coffee export sector, noting that it has yielded substantial results.
