HOPR Update: 167,000 Houses Built in Five Years, Says PM Abiy
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced that over 167,000 houses have been constructed in the past five years, a significant increase compared to the 160,000 built during the 13-year EPRDF era. He also highlighted that over 17 billion birr has been paid in compensation to development-displaced individuals in Addis Ababa, with more than 100,000 houses currently under construction by the government and private sector.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) informed the House of People’s Representatives that the government has paid over 17 billion birr in compensation to development-displaced individuals in Addis Ababa.
The Prime Minister also stated that more than 100,000 houses are currently under construction by both the government and the private sector.
Prime Minister Abiy is responding to questions and providing explanations to members of the House of People’s Representatives.
Recalling that during the EPRDF era, from 1997 to 2010 EC, only about 160,000 houses were built over 13 years, the Prime Minister noted that in the past five years, over 167,000 houses have been constructed.
While acknowledging the high demand for housing in the country, the Prime Minister emphasized that additional efforts are being made and expressed optimism about future progress.
He further clarified that in Addis Ababa, no one has been displaced for development purposes without receiving legal land titles or compensation.
