International Community Urges Dialogue and Upholding of Peace Agreement in Ethiopia

Several embassies and the EU delegation in Ethiopia issued a joint statement, calling for dialogue to ease tensions in northern Ethiopia and reaffirming their support for the 2022 peace agreement. They warned against a return to conflict and expressed readiness to assist.

The embassies of the United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Japan, Norway, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Hungary, Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Finland, Sweden, and the European Union delegation in Ethiopia have issued a joint statement.

In their statement, they emphasized that they are closely monitoring the developments and escalating tensions in northern Ethiopia.

They reiterated their full support for the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement signed in November 2022, highlighting that the agreement has brought about a significant reduction in armed conflict.

They stressed that a return to chaos, conflict, or war is unacceptable and urged all parties to engage in urgent dialogue to ease tensions and uphold the agreement.

They also expressed their readiness to provide any necessary support.

This comes after the President of the Tigray Interim Administration, Mr. Getachew Reda, met with ambassadors from the United States, Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the European Union in Addis Ababa to discuss the current situation in Tigray and the challenges facing his administration.
