"Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed: 'We Are Strengthening Defense Capabilities Not to Fight, But to Deter'"

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated that Ethiopia is enhancing its defense capabilities "to make forces with ill intentions think twice, given their limited capacity." The Prime Minister emphasized, "We are building these capabilities not to fight, but to prevent war."

Abiy made these remarks during the inauguration of "Sky Wing Aeronautics Industry," a drone manufacturing facility, on Saturday, February 29, 2017 (Ethiopian calendar). This was his second visit to defense manufacturing facilities within a week, where he provided explanations about the products being manufactured for military use.

Last Wednesday, the Prime Minister visited the Homicho Ammunition Factory near Ambo town in the Oromia region, where he noted that Ethiopia has "largely overcome its limitations" in terms of military needs. His visit and statements have led some to speculate that Ethiopia is preparing for another round of conflict with Eritrea.

In his recent remarks, Prime Minister Abiy clarified, "We are building these capabilities not to fight, but to deter war. It is to give forces with ill intentions, who may underestimate our capacity, time to think. We are doing this to prevent war, as having a strong capability serves as a deterrent."
