Addis Ababa Residents Produce 0.49 kg of Dry Waste Per Person Daily
Addis Ababa generates 2,500 tons of waste daily, with each resident producing an average of 0.49 kg of dry waste. Over 94% is properly disposed of, while efforts are underway to recycle and convert waste into energy and fertilizers.

The Addis Ababa Sanitation Administration has announced that residents of the city generate 2,500 tons of waste daily, with each person producing an average of 0.49 kg of dry waste.
Dr. Eshetu Lemma, Director General of the Agency, explained to Bsrat Radio and Television that over 94% of the city's waste is being properly disposed of. The remaining 6% is improperly managed, with residents resorting to burning or dumping waste into rivers and sewers.
The Agency is working to address this by converting collected waste into energy, promoting reuse and recycling through youth initiatives, and producing fertilizers. Dr. Eshetu added that these efforts are part of the city's strategy to manage waste more sustainably.
The Agency also reported that 11.5% of the dry waste generated in the city during the fiscal year has been converted into valuable resources.
