The Benishangul-Gumuz Region Agriculture Bureau has announced that over 1.4 billion Birr has been earned from fish production at the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
Dr. Berhanu Iticha, Deputy Head of the Bureau's Livestock Sector, stated that 3,700 tons of fish were produced in the region during the first eight months of the 2017 (Ethiopian Calendar) fiscal year, with 95% of the fish coming from the GERD.
He explained to EPD that an average of 14,646 kilograms of fish is being produced daily at the GERD.
The Deputy Bureau Head noted that fish is being sold at 400 Birr per kilogram in the region and is being transported to Addis Ababa and other regional cities.
Out of 64 associations registered to engage in fish production at the GERD, only 22 have started operations. Efforts are underway to provide modern fishing equipment and support the remaining associations to begin operations.
Previously, annual fish production in the region did not exceed 1,200 tons.
