'Action Taken Against Businesses Failing to Provide Evidence of Genuine Discounts' – Addis Ababa Trade Bureau

The Addis Ababa Trade Bureau has announced that action has been taken against 1,148 businesses over the past seven months for using misleading advertisements.

Among the businesses facing penalties are those that advertised "big holiday discounts" but failed to display the original prices of items, specify the extent of the discounts, or clarify the duration of the offers.

Tesfalem Abera, Director of Consumer Protection at the Bureau, explained to Ahadu Radio that action has been taken against businesses that advertised "big discounts" but failed to provide evidence of actual price reductions.

The Bureau's actions include legal accountability, financial penalties, and revocation of business licenses. Some organizations have also been issued warnings.

The Director reminded businesses that publishing false or misleading discount advertisements about products or services is a criminal offense and urged them to refrain from such practices.
