Ethiopia Earns Over 22 Million Birr from Live Animal Exports in Six Months
Ethiopia exported 369 live animals, including zebras, in the past six months, earning over 22 million Birr. Key markets include Thailand, Hong Kong, China, and North Korea, driven by high demand in Asia.

Ethiopia has generated more than 20 million Birr from the export of live animals over the past six months, according to the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority. Daniel Woldemariam, head of the Wildlife Utilization Desk at the authority, explained to Bsrat Radio and Television that Ethiopia exports non-endangered and non-threatened animals in compliance with international agreements.
He added that species such as zebras, antelopes, and various bird species, including ostriches, are permitted for export. Ethiopia is allowed to export up to 500 zebras annually. In the past six months, the country has exported 369 live zebras.
During the first six months of the 2017 EC(2024-2025) fiscal year, Ethiopia earned over 22 million Birr from the export of live animals. Key export destinations include Thailand, Hong Kong, China, and North Korea. Daniel noted that due to high demand, Ethiopia primarily exports these animals to Asian countries.
