Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Hits Near Adigrat City in Tigray Region
A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck near Adigrat city, 46 kilometers to the east, marking the first seismic event near Tigray's urban areas this year. The tremor follows recent earthquakes in Eritrea and recurring seismic activity in Ethiopia's Afar region.

Today, Sunday, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake occurred near Adigrat city, 46 kilometers to the east, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake took place at 5:14 AM local time, according to the agency.
While recurrent earthquakes have been recorded in the Afar region of Ethiopia since last September, this is the first earthquake recorded near cities in the Tigray region this year. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) noted that the earthquake occurred near the Ethiopia-Eritrea border and measured 5.3 on the Richter scale.
In Eritrea, a magnitude 4.6 earthquake was recorded a week ago. It occurred 24 kilometers northeast of Asmara, in the northern Red Sea region. A similar earthquake was also recorded in mid-December last year.
In July 2023, an earthquake near the Dahlak Islands off the coast of Eritrea caused repeated tremors in various cities in the Tigray region. Residents of cities such as Shire, Adigrat, Adwa, Axum, and Mekelle reported feeling the tremors at the time, as shared with Ethiopia Insider.
