PM Abiy Ahmed Visits Mogadishu in Historic Trip to Strengthen Ethiopia-Somalia Ties
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's visit to Mogadishu marks a significant step in restoring Ethiopia-Somalia relations after recent tensions. The two nations committed to enhancing diplomatic, economic, and social cooperation, with a focus on peace, security, and mutual trust.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) today conducted a working visit to Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. This marks the first such visit following the diplomatic and political tensions that had previously existed between the two countries.
The visit comes after Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited Addis Ababa on January 3, following Turkey's mediation efforts between the two countries. Subsequently, the two leaders met again during the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa.
In a joint statement issued by Ethiopia and Somalia, it was noted that "this visit follows a series of engagements over the past few months and aims to restore the bilateral relations between the two countries to a normal state."
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation for mutual benefit and emphasized the importance of enhancing trust through diplomatic, economic, and social collaboration.
Regarding the significance of this visit, Dr. Gizachew Asrat, Head of the Africa Division at the Foreign Affairs Institute and Senior Researcher, told Deutsche Welle Radio that the visit provides an opportunity for the two countries to engage in confidence-building discussions.
"We observed that the technical team (of the Ankara Agreement) met in Ankara two weeks ago and engaged in discussions. They have reached agreements and understandings and are now conducting talks in a manner that fosters trust," he said.
The researcher added, "The Turkish government has alleviated unnecessary tensions in the region," noting that such positive developments are rare in this volatile area. He emphasized the importance of appreciating such dialogue, negotiation, and peace-building efforts.
The joint statement issued after the visit highlighted that Ethiopia and Somalia are determined to work together to promote shared interests, ensure peace and security, and strengthen their bilateral relations for the benefit of their citizens and the wider Horn of Africa.
Dr. Gizachew also indicated that discussions focusing on "sustained cooperation" will continue.
Earlier reports regarding today's visit indicated that heightened security measures were in place in Mogadishu.
