Sudanese Military Plane Crashes Near Capital Khartoum, Claiming Lives
A Sudanese military plane crashed near the capital city of Khartoum, resulting in the loss of several lives, including civilians and military personnel. The plane, which took off from Wadi Sayyidna military airbase in North Omdurman, a part of Greater Khartoum, crashed on Tuesday morning. Military sources cited by Reuters reported that over 20 people died in the incident.
Sources told Reuters that the crash may have been caused by technical issues. Among the victims is Major General Bahar Ahmed, a high-ranking military commander in Khartoum. Since April 2023, Sudan's military has been engaged in a conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and the military has announced the deaths of both soldiers and civilians without providing further details.
"The injured have been taken to the hospital, and firefighting teams have managed to control the fire at the crash site," the statement said. Residents of North Omdurman reported hearing a loud explosion, which damaged several homes and caused power outages in surrounding neighborhoods.
The Khartoum Committee, part of a network coordinating aid across Sudan, confirmed that 10 bodies and several injured individuals were taken to Al-Nao Hospital in Omdurman.
The war in Sudan, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives, began after a disagreement between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) commander, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF commander, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), over the future structure of the government. The military is currently gaining significant ground in central Sudan and Khartoum through a two-pronged offensive against the RSF.
The plane crash occurred a day after the RSF claimed responsibility for shooting down a Russian-made Ilyushin aircraft in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur.
