"Shining As I Am," a Book Focusing on Autism, Launched in the United States

The book titled "Shining As I Am" ("እንዳለሁ አበራለሁ" in Amharic), originally written in English by author Makda Arshi and translated into Amharic by Tages Seyfu, was officially launched on February 23, 2024, at the Silver Spring Veterans Plaza in Maryland, USA, in the presence of many Ethiopians.

"Shining As I Am" is a book that explains what autism is in simple language for children. The story follows a child with autism as they describe their daily experiences, highlighting the beauty found in differences. It teaches children patience, acceptance, and compassion.

During the launch, the author, Makda Arshi, emphasized that autistic children perceive the world in a unique way. She explained that autism is not a "curse" or "madness," as some in our society believe, but rather a natural occurrence. It ranges from minor behavioral differences that people often overlook to more significant developmental challenges that require substantial support. She stressed that parents must accept their children as gifts from God, though she admitted that she herself had not fully understood this until recently.

Makda also pointed out that many parents face isolation from their communities and lack sufficient information about autism, leading to deep pain and loneliness. Makda Arshi, who currently resides in the United States, is also the author of another children's book titled "Lights of the World," which won five awards, including the Mom's Choice Award in the US.

"Shining As I Am" is currently available for purchase on Amazon, where it has become an Amazon Best Seller. It is also expected to be available soon for readers within Ethiopia.
