16 Arrested for Illegal Gold Mining in Ilibabur Zone

Sixteen individuals were arrested in Ilibabur Zone for illegally mining gold with over 100 people without proper authorization. The court sentenced them to four months in prison, and seized assets, including 131 kg of gold, were declared government property.

"16 Individuals Arrested for Illegally Mining Gold with Over 100 People Without Proper Authorization"

Sixteen individuals who were illegally mining gold with over 100 people without proper authorization in Jawi Kebele, Neddi Woreda, Ilu Aba Bora Zone, have been arrested. The Ilu Aba Bora Zone Police Command announced that the materials used for mining will be converted into government revenue.

Deputy Inspector Lama Boydo, head of the Ilu Aba Bora Zone Police Command Communication Office, told Bsrat that the sixteen individuals were operating without any permits or authorization. They had organized themselves and were illegally extracting gold with more than 100 people. As a result, they have been arrested and charged.

Based on the information received, the police took the sixteen individuals into custody and, in collaboration with the prosecutor, conducted an investigation. The prosecutor charged them under Article 8 of Proclamation No. 223/2012, which governs and regulates mineral resources in the Oromia Region.

The Neddi Woreda Court found the sixteen individuals guilty and sentenced them to four months of simple imprisonment. Additionally, 131 kilograms of gold, 153,000 birr in cash, 3 generators, 16 digging tools, 15 gold sieves, and 3 gold scales seized during the operation were declared government property.
