New Passport Service Branches to Open as Ethiopia Introduces Advanced e-Passport
Ethiopia is launching new e-passport service branches, offering faster processing times and improved accessibility. The new e-passport is a significant upgrade, with services expanding to multiple locations across Addis Ababa and regions.

New Passport Service Branches to Begin Operations
The new e-passport, which Ethiopia has introduced, is described as a significantly advanced travel document in terms of type and quality compared to the existing passport. In addition to the passport, other travel documents have also been updated, and the current passport can still be used until its expiration date. Once the current passport expires, it can be replaced with the new e-passport, as explained by the Director General of Immigration and Citizenship Services, Ms. Selamawit Dawit, in an interview with Bsrat Radio and Television.
Previously, the existing technology was not conducive to opening branches in various locations. However, with the new technology, regular services will begin at four locations in Addis Ababa, and emergency services will also be launched. Additionally, 10 more branches will be established across regions to ensure people can access services locally.
Previously, after applying for a passport, it took up to a year to receive it. With the new technology, applicants can expect to receive their passport within two months, and in some cases, within 10 days. For urgent cases, the passport can be obtained within two days, and by paying an additional 20,000 birr, it can be ready within five days. It was also revealed that there is currently a backlog of over 1.5 million passport applications.
