57 Residential Fires Among 144 Fire Incidents in Addis Ababa in 2017(EC)
In 2017(EC), 57 out of 144 fire incidents in Addis Ababa were residential fires, with most disasters attributed to a lack of caution. The city’s Fire and Disaster Risk Management Commission calls for collective efforts and public awareness to prevent such incidents.

The Addis Ababa City Fire and Disaster Risk Management Commission has stated that most of the sudden disasters occurring in Addis Ababa are caused by a lack of caution.
Every year, numerous high and medium-level disasters occur in Addis Ababa and its surroundings. In the past six months alone, 244 disasters were reported, of which 144 were fire incidents, and the remaining 100 were other sudden disasters.
Out of the 144 fire incidents, 57 were residential fires, making them the most common. Over the past seven years, 737 such incidents have occurred in residential areas.
Commercial shops rank second, followed by factories and other institutions. Similarly, among the 100 sudden disasters reported in the fiscal year, flood-related incidents were the most prevalent.
Today, the Commission held discussions with media experts on ways to prevent recurring fire and other sudden disasters in the city and to minimize damage when they occur.
During the discussion, Commissioner Commander Ahmed Mohammed told Bsrat Radio and Television that most of these disasters are caused by a lack of caution.
He emphasized that preventing these sudden disasters, which arise from negligence, requires collective effort. Additionally, he stressed the need for raising public awareness to address the issue effectively.
