Although the number of malaria cases in the Gambella Region has decreased, it was reported that 2,900 people were infected with the disease just last week.

The Gambella Region Health Bureau announced that efforts to control the spread of malaria are ongoing, and the number of infections has been reduced. Berhe Kalay, a malaria program expert at the bureau, told Bisrat Radio and Television that the campaign has engaged the community in activities such as draining stagnant water sources that create favorable conditions for malaria-carrying mosquitoes.

As a result, the spread of malaria in the region has been reduced by 33%, achieving part of the 50% reduction target, Berhe added. Previously, over 4,000 people were infected with malaria weekly, but the number has now decreased.

While efforts to prevent malaria have reduced the number of infections, 2,900 people were confirmed to have contracted the disease last week alone. The bureau emphasized that malaria prevention activities will continue intensively during both the dry and rainy seasons to fully curb the spread of the disease and protect public health. Additionally, health extension workers are conducting house-to-house awareness campaigns to educate the community about the nature of the disease.
