Addis Referral Hospital Struggles with Oncologist Shortage Amid Rising Cancer Cases
Addis Referral Hospital in Mekelle is providing adult cancer treatment with only two oncologists, facing shortages of both medical professionals and cancer medications. Efforts are underway to address these challenges and promote early detection.

Addis Referral Hospital is currently providing adult cancer treatment with only two oncologists, it has been revealed.
Located in Mekelle City, Addis Referral Hospital offers a wide range of services, including cancer treatment for both adults and children. The hospital provides specialized care for blood, liver, colon, cervical, and breast cancers, delivered by highly experienced medical professionals. Dr. Destu Mulu, an oncologist at Addis Referral Hospital, shared this information during an interview with Bisrat.
Dr. Destu stated that the hospital is currently treating a significant number of adults suffering from breast, cervical, and liver cancers, providing care for up to seven cancer patients daily. When asked about the staffing situation, Dr. Destu explained that while there were previously six specialists in the adult cancer treatment department, the hospital now operates with only two oncologists. This shortage creates a significant gap in care, especially as the hospital serves patients from neighboring regions.
The primary reason for the shortage of medical professionals is the current situation, compounded by the fact that the salaries offered are very low, forcing many to seek alternative opportunities. Additionally, Dr. Destu highlighted the severe shortage of cancer medications at the hospital. While cancer treatment is advancing globally, Addis Referral Hospital continues to struggle with shortages of supplies and medications.
Despite these challenges, the hospital is working to address these issues. Dr. Destu emphasized the need for widespread awareness campaigns, as most patients only seek treatment at the hospital when their cancer has reached the third or fourth stage. He stressed the importance of early detection and treatment, urging efforts to educate the public so that patients can seek care before their condition worsens.
