Egg Prices Surge in Addis Ababa Amid Lack of Adequate Investigation
Egg prices in Addis Ababa have risen sharply, with local eggs exceeding 20 birr and foreign eggs selling for 18 birr. The Ministry of Agriculture cites insufficient investigation into the causes, despite record egg production exceeding targets.

The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that there has been insufficient investigation into the unjustified price increase of eggs in Addis Ababa.
The Ministry revealed that there has been no adequate study regarding the unusual surge in egg prices in Addis Ababa compared to other times.
A market survey conducted by Bisrat revealed that the price of a local egg in various trading areas in Addis Ababa exceeds 20 birr, while a foreign egg sells for 18 birr.
When asked about the reasons behind the unjustified price increase of the product, Mrs. Tsigereda Fikadu, the Director-General of Livestock and Fisheries Development at the Ministry, told Bisrat Radio and Television that a study is needed to determine the cause.
She added that if there are issues such as supply shortages, fuel price hikes, or other factors in the market chain, they should be monitored, and the root cause of the price increase must be identified. On the other hand, the Director-General stated that there has been a good production of eggs, with production exceeding the plan in the past six months.
She explained that during this period, the country planned to produce 4 billion eggs but ended up producing 4.5 billion eggs, surpassing the target. To address the recent unusual price surge in eggs, she emphasized the need to widely supply the product and monitor entities causing price hikes.
