The Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Service (EPSS) is working to meet the needs of healthcare institutions by providing 54 types of cancer medications, according to Deputy Director General Mr. Solomon Negussie, who spoke to Bsrat Radio and Television.
Mr. Solomon explained that cancer treatment services are currently being offered in 31 healthcare institutions. Due to the increasing demand, the EPSS has made a large-scale purchase worth 600 million birr to address the overall need. He added that most of these medications have already arrived in the country and are being distributed to healthcare facilities, while some are still in the process of being imported. As a result, the availability of these medications in stock has reached over 80%.
To prevent supply shortages and address the growing demand, the Ministry of Health has established a tripartite agreement framework under a specific program. This agreement involves healthcare institutions, the Ministry of Health, and the Pharmaceutical Supply Service. Under this agreement, the Ministry of Health covers 50% of the medication costs to ensure they are provided at an affordable price. Additionally, the Ministry covers 13% of transportation, banking, and customs fees to further support patients.
Mr. Solomon Negussie, Deputy Director General of the EPSS, emphasized that these efforts are aimed at making cancer medications more accessible and affordable for patients. He shared these details with Bsrat Radio and Television.
